The standard advice is to paint a small room white. It is not wrong, but it is incomplete — and followed carelessly it produces a room that feels like a box with a lid rather than a space that goes on.
What actually makes a room feel small
Not darkness, but visible edges. The eye reads the corner where two differently coloured surfaces meet as the boundary of the space. The more of those boundaries you draw, the smaller the room reads.
This is why a white wall meeting a sharply white ceiling with a contrasting frieze can feel tighter than a room done in a single soft mid-tone throughout.
Carry the colour over the edges
Take the wall colour onto the ceiling, or onto a knocked-back version of it, and the corner stops announcing itself. The same trick works with skirting and frames painted in the wall colour rather than in contrasting white.

Light reflectance beats hue
How light a room feels depends far more on how much light the surfaces return than on which colour they are. That figure is the LRV, printed on every shade page here.
A soft green at LRV 72 will make a room feel more open than a cold grey at LRV 45, even though most people would call the grey the more neutral choice.
When to go dark instead
A small room with little natural light will never be bright, and fighting that with pale paint often produces something that reads as dingy rather than airy.
The alternative is to stop fighting: a deep shade over walls, ceiling and joinery turns a small dark room into a deliberate one. It works best in rooms used in the evening — a study, a dining room, a cloakroom.
